Good luck.GETTING HEAD SHOTS by Ted Sarantos
Although there are ways of
getting started in acting without having a head shot right away, you
will want one as soon as possible. The more time you take, the better
chance you have of getting a usable head shot, so start the process as
soon as you can. Plan on taking a few months.
If you are going
to spend hundreds of dollars on your head shot, you don't want to try
to get a GOOD head shot, you want to try to get an EXCELLENT head shot.
And most likely you won't succeed on your first attempts.
However,
you can acquire a GOOD, USABLE head shot while you are gaining the
knowledge and experience to eventually have an EXCELLENT head shot..
First, realize a head shot is RADICALLY different from any picture you have ever had.
You
want a head shot that makes the agent or casting director say, "This
actor is fascinating, appealing, and professional, and I want to meet
with him immediately." You do not want the agent to think you submitted
your graduation photo.
Realize YOU are the ONLY person responsible for acquiring the best possible head shot.
The
photographer knows more about this area than you do, and you will
consider everything he has to tell you. But he is not the boss. YOU ARE
THE BOSS. It's your money. You are hiring the photographer as a one
time consultant, and if you are not happy with your final head shot,
it's your fault, and no one else's.
Even if everyone agrees that
your head shot is terrible and that the photographer has never taken a
decent head shot is his life, YOUR TERRIBLE HEAD SHOT IS STILL YOUR
FAULT. YOU HIRED THE WRONG PHOTOGRAPHER.
Conversely, if everyone
agrees that the photographer is excellent and always takes a good head
shot EXCEPT IN YOUR CASE it is still your fault. You hired the wrong
photographer FOR YOU.
Therefore, interview several photographers
by going into their studios by appointment. Look at dozens of samples
of their work. Find out which one can help you the most to bring out
your personality during the subsequent photo shoot. Good rapport is
mandatory..
Listen to everything any photographer tells you
about how she thinks you can get the best look. Consider everything
you've learned from every source. Then MAKE YOUR OWN DECISIONS
regarding what you want your head shot to be. If you think you will
advance your career fastest by shaving all your hair off the right side
of your head, leaving all the hair on the left side of your head,
that's your decision. l think it's a stupid idea and advise you not to
do it, but, hey, what do I know? You're the boss of your own career.
